Paris is a fantastic city with many things to do and see. However, around Paris are a number of amazing French towns and villages all with their own unique charms and things to see.

Many are easy to get to and can make for a great day away from Paris for some sightseeing, shopping and tasting local produce. These towns often have the benefits of being  almost tourist free, cheaper than Paris, and (often) much less busy than Paris. However, remember that much of France's retail is closed on Sunday's so if you are visiting on a Sunday don't plan to shop!

 Senlis

With a medieval heart, Senlis blends the ancient with the modern. Not only does it have ancient walls, a Roman arena and ancient churches, it has good shopping and eating as well.

Rouen

Admire amazing Gothic architecture and explore where Joan of Arc spent her last days.

 Dreux

Home to a Chapelle Royal and an excellent plaza to enjoy a drink or lunch in front of a church with an unfinished tower.

Angers

Picture
Nestled in the Loire Valley, Angers is best known for its castle which is home to the  oldest French tapestry in the world.

Provins

Picture
The closest you are likely to ever get to experiencing Medieval France. Provins has a well preserved Medieval section and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Blois

Blois just might be one of the perfect French towns to visit; packed with history and great architecture, and really nice people.
