The Catholic church has played an important part in the history of France. While now a secular country, the history of France is inescapably intertwined with the church. Churches are everywhere in Paris. Outside of Paris villages are clustered around the local church and the town hall (which are often across the road from each other).

Many important events in French history have happened in and around it's churches. Weddings, coronations, death and the remembrance of important French people. These churches also provide stunning examples of architecture, stained glass windows, statuary and other fine arts. If you are visiting France, then seeing it's churches is a must.

 St Denis Basilica

Picture

The burial site for the kings of queens of France for centuries (including Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI). A church full of amazing funeral statuary and only 20 minutes from Paris.

Chartres Cathedral

Picture

With its mismatching towers and its ancient 12th and 13th century stained glass windows this church is well worth a visit. The fact that Chartres is a nice town helps doesn't hurt either.

Bourges Cathedral

Considered one of France's best examples of early Gothic architecture, Bourges' cathedral has been a UNESCO world heritage sight since 1992.
